Hacia las 9.00h, tras la eucaristía, los electores se dirigieron a la curia y subieron las escaleras que llevan al aula, la gran sala en la que la votación tendría lugar. A los pocos minutos comenzaba la elección en estricto silencio. Tras una hora de oración, los congregados tendrían que escribir a mano su voto e introducirlo en la urna de la elección. Eran las 9.30h cuando las puertas del aula se cerraban definitivamente. Sólo se abrirían de nuevo tras la elección del nuevo general.
After Mass they moved into the Curia around 9:00 and climbed the stairs up to the "aula" or large meeting room where the voting would take place. Once the last elector entered the aula, the doors were closed and access to the aula cut off to guard the secrecy of the election which took place in strict silence. Another hour of prayer preceded the vote in which each elector wrote the name of his choice on paper and placed it in a ballot box. The doors closed at 9:30 and would not open again until the election of the new general.
