    New Website of the Curia

The General Curia is currently restructuring communications. One of the tasks include building a completely new website of the Curia. The communications taskforce established by Father General has created a short survey to enable readers of our bulletin to participate in the creation process of the new website. The survey takes only 5 minutes. The survey is completely anonymous. Please click the following link to participate in the survey: https://goo.gl/forms/DITtyyzbyUYdkVuN2

    Meeting of Socii

Socii (assistant to provincials) from provinces in Africa, South Asia, Asia Pacific and Europe met from 15th to 19th May in the General Curia. The idea was for them to familiarize themselves with the operations of the central government of the Society in their mission of accompanying the provincials in government of the provinces. In his address to the Socii, Father General reminded them of the importance of the universality of the Society. He emphasised the main points of General Congregation 36, namely Discernment, Collaboration, and Networking. Father General urged the Socii to assist the provincials and the provinces to always keep in mind the idea that we are Servants of Christ's Mission. Hence the importance of collaborating with others in the mission.

    Father General has appointed

He will take office on July 8, succeeding Father Francisco José Ruiz Pérez who has been provincial of Spain since June 2014.

    - Father Raphael Joseph Hyde (CCU) as provincial of Calcutta Province. Father Hyde was born in 1963, entered the Society in 1983, and was ordained in 1998. He is currently the rector of St Lawrence community. He will take office in the next few weeks, succeeding Father Veluswamy Jeyaraj.

IRELAND: Blessed John Sullivan SJ beatified - a day for rejoicing

The first ever beatification in Ireland, that of Fr John Sullivan SJ, took place at 11 am on 13 May, 2017 in Gardiner Street Church. The principal celebrant and homilist was Cardinal Angelo Amato, Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, and he was assisted by the Archbishop of Dublin, Diarmuid Martin. The Church of Ireland Archbishop of Dublin, Michael Jackson, was also present on the sanctuary. In his homily, Cardinal Amato quoted often from the submissions of ordinary people to the cause of Fr John. "Witnesses in the diocesan processes often repeated that Fr Sullivan was 'a poor man among the poor', 'the personification of the spirit of poverty'. Even though he came from a rich family, once he became a religious he was oblivious to comforts and contented himself with that which was purely necessary. Faithful to the vow of poverty, he gave immediately to others every gift he received." Read more...

LATIN AMERICA: VIII Pan-Amazonian Social Forum

On May 1, Jesuit institutions from Latin America attending the VIII Pan-Amazonian Social Forum in Tarapoto, Peru, published a statement about the situation the Amazonia is facing. Amazonia is shared by nine countries; it is very rich in natural resources and has been constantly exploited, but local communities are suffering from the transformation of the environment and their human rights are under threat.
