Small Arms

The UN small arms review conference held 24th-27th July 2006 (see Headlines 2006/03), only the second of its kind to be called by the UN, was aimed at providing a clear framework for governments to protect people from gun violence. Unfortunately, as a statement released by IANSA reveals, “the long awaited UN Small Arms conference has ended in failure. Hijacked by a small number of states, notably the US, the conference failed to agree on any measures at all to address the global gun crisis.” Together with Oxfam and Amnesty International, IANSA, the International Action Network on Small Arms, is the coordinator of Control Arms, a campaign launched in 2003 to introduce tougher arms trade regulations.
