France: The Social Apostolate and the theme of "Tenacious Hope"

One hundred and fifteen participants took part in the annual gathering of the Social Apostolate in France on 13 and 14 October. Jesuits, lay people and women religious had come together to share the hope which inspires their activities, to tell each other about the expressions of faith in their social commitment, and to exchange their views on the changes occurring in French society.

The French provincial, Fr François-Xavier Dumortier SJ outlined in his opening speech the challenges for the Social Apostolate. He asked participants to be open to the social and cultural context in which they work and to be aware of the political dimension of their commitment. He asked those present to invest intellectually in social research while being rooted spiritually in the choices they had made for their lives. "Daring, discerning, assessing", these three words summarised for him the task ahead for the Social Apostolate.
